Gifty, a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Stanford, studies reward-seeking behavior while grappling with her brother's overdose and her mother's depression. As she seeks scientific answers to her family's suffering, she also wrestles with her childhood faith and the elusive promise of salvation from her evangelical upbringing.
