Viděli jste Bone Tomahawk a četli Simmonsův Terror? Pak je Hlad přesně pro vás. Alma Katsu se tady odráží od skutečné historické události a přimíchává indiánské mýty a to se nechte překvapit. Fakta jsou jasná - Donnerova výprava na své cestě do Kalifornie v roce 1846 udělala několik fatálních chyb. Zvrhla se v boj o život, konflikty, vraždy a kanibalismus. Katsu, stejně jako zmiňovaný Simmons, přidává hororovou (ok, ty skutečné události jsou taky dost hororové) zápletku, díky níž tragický příběh z dob osidlování Ameriky dostává úplně jiný rozměr. Není to kopírka Terroru, ten je sám o sobě nepřekonatelný, Katsu prostě stejně skvěle těží z historické události - tady občas možná až moc popisuje. Minimálně do chvíle, než výprava zjistí, že její šance na přežití, primárně kvůli nehostinné krajině, klesají k nule - stejně jako okolní teplota. Zatímco první mrtvoly připisují smečce hladových vlků, brzy jim začne docházet, že v okolí řádí něco úplně jiného. A s ubývajícími zásobami bují neshody uvnitř téměř stočlenné výpravy. Smrtelná kombinace. Katsu si v Hladu napětí šetří, aby v závěru rozjela smršť. Paranoia v táboře, beznaděj, podivné noční útoky - osadníci dostávají naloženo ze všech směrů a k tomu poodhaluje temnou minulost několika postav. A vše to zvládá spojit v jeden chutný a šťavnatý celek.
