The story follows four humans who crash-land on an icy planet, initially believing it to be desolate. Upon daylight, they uncover a vast spiral of planets surrounding a central sun. Their journey leads them to seek a more habitable world, encountering bizarre alien races and facing life-threatening dangers along the way.
