The construction of large hydroelectric projects in Brazil, particularly the Estreito plant, reflects the country's shift towards alternative energy following the 1970s oil crisis. Built between 2007 and 2010, this project aimed to support economic growth in the primary and secondary sectors. However, it led to significant deterritorialisation, displacing local communities such as fishermen and farmers who had long relied on the Tocantins River for their livelihoods, highlighting the complex interplay between industrial development and social disruption.
