Focusing on the unique evolution of Chinese indentured labor in the Dutch East Indies from 1880 to 1942, the author highlights its distinct characteristics compared to other bonded labor forms. The book draws on extensive fieldwork in the tin islands of Bangka and Belitung, as well as Sumatra's Deli plantations, combined with a rich array of archival materials in multiple languages. This research aims to enhance the historical narrative surrounding indenture, particularly in its later years post-1917, and introduces specialized terminology relevant to the Chinese context.
