William Wymark Jacobs, originally a civil service clerk, transitioned to writing in his late twenties, with his first short story published in 1895. He is renowned for his macabre tales, particularly those in his 1902 collection, which includes the famous stories "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Toll House." Although much of his work was humorous, it is these darker narratives that have solidified his legacy in literature.
