A Pickle for the Knowing Ones

Více o knize

Timothy Dexter, born in Malden on January 22, 1747, authored the curious work "A Pickle for the Knowing Ones," presented here in its original form. After completing an apprenticeship as a leather dresser, he established a business in Newburyport at the age of twenty-one. His industriousness and frugality soon led him to financial stability. In 1770, he married and received a substantial dowry, further enhancing his fortune. By 1776, he had an apprentice, the eccentric Jonathan Plumer, who later became a notable figure in his own right. Dexter expanded his business beyond leather goods, engaging in various successful commercial ventures, including trade with Maine and the West Indies. He invested heavily in State securities, which yielded significant returns. His ventures in whalebone and warming pans are detailed in the text. As his wealth grew, so did his desire for distinction. Dexter indulged his vanity by purchasing an ornate house on High Street, adorned with minarets topped with golden balls and a gilt eagle. He also erected between forty and fifty life-sized wooden statues in front of his property, showcasing his unique sense of grandeur and ambition.
