In our current age of post-truth, we must heed Pope Benedict XVI's call to carefully consider what "the real" truly is. The concept of 'realism' can blind us to reality, leading us to question whether we have become insular. Benedict challenges us to reflect on the significance of God in our understanding of reality. Both liturgy and literature explore this question, often diverging in their interpretations. At times, art and worship risk becoming self-referential, losing meaning, akin to 'bank notes' lacking substance. These closed circles hinder our connection to transcendence. In contrast, authentic liturgy draws the congregation into a cosmic song of praise, transcending individual thoughts. Similarly, contemplative literature invites us to engage with creation, fostering gratitude and a longing for a broader vision. This manifesto for 'contemplative realism' does not aim to create a new aesthetic but to highlight an existing literary approach found in various works and among living artists. It seeks to unite and inspire those who resonate with this vision, regardless of their literary expertise. Ultimately, it aspires to awaken a contemplative realist disposition in as many individuals as possible, addressing the concerning decline in our ability to perceive the world around us.
