With this publication, Voltaire offered the French public a panoramic view of English culture, influencing French attitudes to England. Voltaire depicted England as the land of freedom, tolerance, and progress, whereas France was still a feudal tyranny, dogged by superstition. At the same time, he satirizes the illogical side of English institutions.
