The delicate splendour and fairytale beauty of Islamic artThe art which arose from the 7th century in the Islamic empires reached from Spain and Morocco to the borders of China. It bore the stamp above all of Arabs, Persians and Turks, but outstanding contributions also came from Egypt and India. "Islamic Art" presents prominent luxury ceramics, prayer mats, goldsmithery, as well as witnesses to the decorative arts and calligraphy – and above all the masterpieces of the splendidly colourful courtly book illumination of Persia and the Mughal emperors of India. The book examines the contributions of the different countries and how they influenced each other, and in this way vividly illustrates the unfolding of the delicate splendour and fairytale beauty of Islamic art from its beginnings into the modern era.

  • This visceral life: Seeing the world through Expressionist eyes Sharp angles, strange forms, lurid colors, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks ofExpressionism, the twentieth century movement thatprioritized emotion over objective reality. Though particularly present in Germany and Austria, the movement s approach flourished internationally and is today hailed asone of the most influential shifts in art history. With leading groupsDie Brucke(The Bridge) andDer Blaue Reiter(The Blue Rider), and key players such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, andEmil Nolde, the Expressionists disowned Impressionism, which they regarded as man lowered to the position of a gramophone record of the outer world, to depict instead araw and visceral experienceof life as it was felt, rather than seen on the surface. Their paintings brim with emotive force, conveyed in particular throughintense and non-naturalistic color palettes, loose brushwork, and thick textures.Covering the group s stylistic tendencies, influences, and most important protagonists, this introductory book explores the Expressionist panorama of moods, ideas, and emotions and their abiding quest for deep authenticity. About the series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions a detailed illustrated introduction plus a timeline of the most important political, cultural, and social events that took place during that period a selection of the most important works of the epoch, each presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and accompanying interpretation, as well as a portrait and brief biography of the artist "

"Discover how scenes of daily life and delicate dabs of color shocked the art world establishment. In this introduction to Impressionism, we explore the artists, subjects, and techniques that first brought the easel out of the studio and shifted artistic attention from history, religion, or portraiture to the evanescent ebb and flow of modern life. As we tour the theaters, bars, and parks of Paris and beyond, we take in the movement's radical innovations in style and subject, from the principle of plein air painting to the rapid, broken brushwork that allowed the Impressionists to emphasize spontaneity, movement, and the changing qualities of light. We take a close look at their unusual new perspectives and their fresh palette of pure, unblended colors, including many vivid shades that brought a whole new level of chromatic intensity to the canvas. Along the way, we recognized Impressionism's established greats, such as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, and Camille Pissarro, as well as many associated artists worthy of closer attention, including Marie Bracquemond, Medardo Rosso, and Fritz von Udhe." -- Provided by publisher

"Genuine ideas to express" Sometimes considered the first avant-garde art movement, the Pre-Raphaelites rejected their era’s dominant artistic theories for what they saw as a more spiritual, naturalistic and intensely personal approach. Fascinated by the romantic aspects of medieval culture and the vivid, jewel-like colors of Quattrocento art, the movement abhored the Classical poses and composition of Raphael and those influenced by him—hence the group’s name—and the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Founded in 1848 by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the original Pre-Raphaelites were joined by William Michael Rossetti, James Collinson, Frederic George Stephens and Thomas Woolner to form a seven-member "brotherhood". Its influence on many later British artists was extensive, and Rossetti’s work is now seen as a precursor of the wider European Symbolist movement. This book examines the group’s emergence, development, influence, and subsequent demise. About the Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre Series

Vývoj dvorské stavovské společnosti a vzestup měšťanské kultury podporují rozvoj gotického umění a vedou také uměleckou tvorbu k zjemnění a eleganci nového druhu.

Táto kniha približuje hlavných predstaviteľov tohto smeru a ich diela.

The birth of the occidental concept of man The 18th century`s Neoclassicist movement, with its white marble sculptures inspired by the art of the ancient world, has helped Greek art to remain vivid in our memories even today. But the reality of ancient art was entirely different, as surfaces were in fact much more brut. As author Michael Siebler points out, recent findings have revealed that the seemingly perfect bodies of statues and sculptures were very often painted in flamboyant colors and ornaments. Thus ancient Greek art combined a high level of classical identity with an equal amount of sensuality. Despite being viewed in a new light, the beauty of the works of art persists. Including detailed analyses of the following Alexander-sarcophagus; Apoxyomenos; Amphora; Diskobol; Apoll from Belvedere; Laocoon; Nike from Samothrake; the altar from Pergamon, now in Berlin; the Alexander-mosaic in Naples; Harmodios and Aristogeiton, in Naples; Doryphoros; sculptures from the Alphaia-temple, now in Munich; Amphora; Ptolemaier-Cameo in Vienna; Hermes; Apollo from the Zeus-temple in Olympia; numerous sculptures in Athens; Krater, now in New York; some Elgin Marbles in London; the warrior from Riace, now in Reggio .

Land of The earth as canvas In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums. It began with ephemeral enhancements or traces left in deserted landscapes, in the deserts of America, or in the moors of Scotland. Following this were spectacular earthen sculptures of gigantic proportions, some of which are still in the process of completion today. One distinguishing feature of Land Art is its critical preoccupation with the tradition of sculpture. Sculpture can now be an earthwork excavation, a field of metal poles, a buried hut, a trace in the grass, or even a book. Another of the movement’s special characteristics is its emphasis on site-specific, outdoor works intended to lastingly alter our perception of places, and to set new parameters in art production and reception. Artists Carl Andre, Alice Aycock, Herbert Bayer, Christo & Jeanne Claude, Walter De Maria, Agnes Denes, Jan Dibbets, Hamish Fulton, Andy Goldsworthy, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt, Peter Hutchinson, Patricia Johanson, Dani Karavan, Richard Long, Mary Miss, Robert Morris, Dennis Oppenheim, Charles Ross, Robert Smithson, Alan Sonfist, James Turrell About the Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre Series
