Specifické společenské a ekonomické podmínky v USA třicátých let umožnily do té doby nevídaný nárůst kriminality. Podnikavost bezcharakterních a flustrovaných asociálních jedinců dostala křídla a svým vzepětím omráčila i zaskočila širokou veřejnost nejen ve Spojených státech. Senzacechtiví novináři udělali z Johna Dillingera exportní superhvězdu, jejíž ohlas si v ničem nezadal s idoly stříbrného plátna, tehny ani kdykoliv potom. Všechny známé barvité postavy té doby, které se ještě za svého života staly legendami americké moderní historie jsou zachyceny v této knize.
