Jako čtrnáctý svazek edice Patristika vycházejí promluvy, které hipponský biskup svatý Augustin (354–430) pronesl v průběhu postní doby. Ve svazku je zařazeno osm postních promluv, dále osm promluv ke kandidátům křtu v rámci jejich přípravy na křest – jde převážně o promluvy k předání či složení vyznání víry, a nakonec čtyři promluvy na památku utrpení Páně, které Augustin přednesl během velkopátečních obřadů. Úvodní studie profesora Radislava Hoška. Soubor rozprav a korespondence svatého Augustina – největšího myslitele křesťanského starověku. Cílem pořadatele a zároveň překladatele je ukázat složitou osobnost Augustinovu co možná nejkomplexněji, a to jako filosofa, teologa, moralistu i církevního představitele. Proto zde najdeme jak úvahy o svobodě vůle, o roli milosti či o manželství, tak polemiky proti těm, kdo tehdy pravověrnost křesťanů ohrožovali – – tedy donatistům – – či proti mohutnému proudu mimokřesťanskému – – manicheismu – – jenž tehdy byl nejvážnějším konkurentem Kristova učení a ke kterému se sám Augustin v mládí hlásil.

První část spisu (kniha I.-X.) je především apologetická - obrací se proti pohanství: bohové nejsou dárci pozemského blaha; krutými válkami i vnitřním rozkolem trpěla říše už před Kristem a její velikost byla odměnou za starořímské ctnosti. K těmto ctnostem však nevedlo mnohobožství; věčnou blaženost pak nedává ani filosofie. V druhé části díla (kniha XI.-XXII.) Augustin podává v rámci světových dějin mohutný obraz Boží obce, t. j. společenství spravedlivých vyznavačů pravého Boha, putujících tímto světem uprostřed příslušníků obce pozemské, kterou založili padlí andělé tím, že strhli část lidstva ke hříchu. Ve střetu obou obcí - boží a pozemské - t. j. v zápase mezi křesťanstvím a pohanstvím, jde především o duše lidí. Jedná se tak o zcela novou teorii dějinného vývoje. Proti starověké představě o cyklickém pohybu stále se obnovujícího světa, staví Augustin lineární pojetí vývoje -dějiny směřují od prvotního hříchu k poslednímu soudu, který s konečnou platností.

Augustin z Hippo (354-430) je všeobecně známý jako neklidný hledač pravdy, konvertita, biskup a učený teolog, málokdo ho zná jako mnicha. Jeho osobnost však můžeme zcela pochopit jen tehdy, máme-li na zřeteli, že po svém obrácení chtěl být výhradně ‚služebníkem Božím‘, tj. právě mnichem. Sepsáním první klášterní řehole v západní oblasti ovlivnil rozhodujícím způsobem konkrétní utváření křesťanského řádového ideálu, a tím i základ dalšího vývoje řádového života v západní Evropě,“ píše v úvodu k řeholi sv. Augustina Tarsicius Jan van Bavel OSA. Emeritní profesor teologické fakulty Katolické univerzity v belgické Lovani se Augustinovou řeholí zabývá přes čtyřicet let. Komentář k ní je zralým plodem jeho celoživotní práce.

„Mezi mysliteli starověku je Augustin jediný, kdo chápe ty nejniternější pocity moderního člověka,“ prohlásil španělský filosof Ortega y Gasset. Duchovní autobiografie svatého Augustina patří vedle Bible a Následování Krista ke stálicím na pomyslném nebi duchovní literatury. Nadčasová popularita knihy spočívá hlavně v tom, že s nevídanou autentičností svědčí nejen o lidské křehkosti, ale i o palčivém hledání a nacházení toho nejpodstatnějšího v životě člověka. Poslední, opakovaně vydávaný český překlad Vyznání pochází z roku 1926 a jazykově už notně zastaral. Karmelitánské nakladatelství přináší nový překlad díla pro čtenáře 21. století, doplněný o odborný úvod, vysvětlivky a rejstříky.

Traktáty nejvýraznějšího představitele patristiky zkoumají podstatu lži, manželství, nevinnosti, trpělivosti a vdovství. V díle "O lži" hipponský biskup vymezuje lež jako touhu ducha klamat a zdůrazňuje hříšnost této formy podvodu. Následující spis nachází možnost osobního uchování křesťanské morálky v odmítání lži či kajícném doznání. Třetí traktát odhaluje mravní význam instituce manželství, jež neumožňuje vznik hříchu, avšak na vrchol etického jednání staví sexuální zdrženlivost. "Kniha o svaté nevinnosti" interpretuje sexuální nevinnost z hlediska principů křesťanství. Pátý spis definuje zásady, které se vztahují k vdovskému stavu. Závěrečná úvaha pojímá podstatu lidské trpělivosti coby ctnosti ducha. Jednotící prvek tématicky značně různorodých textů spočívá v křesťanské interpretaci otázek tzv. každodenní morálky.

Odpověď Simplicianovi. Dva spisy Svatého Augustina, biskupa a učitele církve, největšího církevního otce křesťanského Západu. V obou se řeší nesnadná otázka: Jaký je vztah Boží milosti k lidské svobodě? V první spisu probírá Augustin námět systematicky, odpovídá na znepokojení hadrumetských mnichů, že v jiných spisech údajně popíral svobodu lidské vůle. Odpověď Simplicianovi, první dílo Augustina jako biskupa, je přímý výklad několika biblických míst, jenž má přesněji zodpovědět, komu a proč se dostává Božího omilostnění.

Katechetické spisy sv. Augustina vyrůstaly na půdě života starověké církve a byly jí také určeny. Jeho génius však způsobil, že jsou stejně živé i dnes, po více než půl druhém tisíciletí.

Ústředním tématem Augustinova díla je biblická exegeze a její vztah k pohanské učenosti, která se rozvíjí vedle výkladu teorie znaku a metody homiletiky, kazatelského umění. V teorii znaku navazuje Augustin na platonismus a helénistickou filozofii, původ hermeneutiky nachází v exegetických metodách alexandrijských gramatiků, jeho homiletika vychází z antické rétoriky, jejíž teorii i praxi se Augustin jako všichni vzdělanci jeho doby povinně učil. Předkládaný spis hluboce ovlivnil vývoj křesťanské kultury a vzdělanosti, jakož i teologického myšlení ve středověku. Největšího porozumění se v některých obdobích dostávalo právě poslední, spíše praktické části, pročež bylo dílo známo také pod názvem De arte predicandi, „O kazatelském umění“. Spis, který vychází česky poprvé, přeložila a úvodem a poznámkami opatřila prof. Jana Nechutová.

Do tohoto svazku vybraných spisů svatého Augustina jsou zařazena celkem čtyři díla: O víře a vyznání víry, O křesťanském boji, O zdrženlivosti, O užitečnosti postu. Všechna tato pojednání mají týž základní rys: zdůraznění pravé, čisté víry jako nezbytného základu pro správný mravní život, pro úspěšný "křesťanský boj", jímž rozumí sv. Augustin boj proti ďáblu přemáháním zlých žádostí. Výklady o jednotlivých pravdách víry, o různých dogmatických bludech (zejména o manichejském znehodnocování tělesnosti), o povaze a podmínkách ctnosti zdrženlivosti i o smyslu křesťanského postu jsou neobyčejně názorné a živé, všímají si konkrétních otázek mravního života a poskytnou i modernímu čtenáři odpověď na mnohou otázku, která ho znepokojuje.

Bijna veertig jaar lang heeft Augustinus (354-430) in Noord-Afrika de geloofsgemeenschap als predikant gediend. Van heinde en verre kwamen mensen naar de kerk om zelf de woorden van de befaamde bisschop te beluisteren of zijn preken in opdracht van anderen op te tekenen. Zo zijn ongeveer zeshonderd preken van hem bewaard.Voor deze bundel werden achtentwintig preken vertaald van de sermones de scripturis. Dit boek bevat de laatste reeks preken over passages uit brieven van het Nieuwe Testament. Op twee uitzonderingen na verschijnt in dit boek van alle preken de eerste Nederlandse vertaling.In bijna elke preek komen verrassende wendingen aan het licht. Monumentálne dielo sv. Augustína vyšlo po prvý raz v slovenskom preklade v roku 1948. Je to reprezentatívna kniha kresťanskej literatúry s historickým i metafyzickým pohľadom na boj dobra so zlom v celých ľudských dejinách. Autor vyvracia argumenty nepriateľov kresťanstva a chce poučiť kresťanov o hlbšom zmysle ich náboženstva. Sv. Augustín písal túto mravno-náboženskú úvahu trinásť rokov a je to jeho hlavné dielo.

Der Dialog »De beata vita« ist der beredte Versuch, antikphilosophisches Denken mit dem christlichen Glauben zu versöhnen. Die Methode, Glauben durch Denken und, umgekehrt, Philosophie durch Religion wechselseitig zu interpretieren und zu bestimmen, gilt von Augustin an als legitim.
