Kniha věnovaná jednomu z nejoblíbenějších uměleckých směrů 20. století představeném prostřednictvím slavných i méně známých, ale neméně významných děl. „Kdo je kubista? Je to malíř ze školy Braqua a Picassa.“ Vysvětloval jeden umělecký kritik v roce 1911, krátce po otevření skandálního „Salon des Indépendants“, na němž měli kubisté vlastní výstavní místnost. Georges Braque a Pablo Picasso byli vynálezci způsobu malování, jež kráčelo ve šlépějích postimpresionisty Paula Cézanna:“ Všechny formy v přírodě lze redukovat na kouli, kužel a válec.“ Přesto Kubisté neznázorňovali své motivy tak, jak je vidí pod nějakým úhlem oko: své obrazy rozkládali na čelní pohledy, zobrazení v profilu, perspektovy zdola, shora a ze stran, a to všechno najednou. Revolta proti sentimentálnímu a realistickému malířství impresionismu začal v uměleckých kruzích Paříže roku 1907 – vrcholu dosáhl kubismus v roce 1914, a tak byly obrazy, které měly navždy změnit pohled na svět, vytvořit jen v průběhu několika málo let.

Pop-art, vzniklý v polovině padesátých let dvacátého století v Anglii a naplno rozvinutý ve Spojených státech šedesátých let nahrajuze všednost nádherou; předměty hromadné výroby nabývají stejné důležitosti jako individuální kusy; smazán je rozdíl mezi vysokou a lidovou kulturou. Pop-art svým vlastním vtipným způsobem oslavuje konzumní společnost a k jeho oblíbeným zdrojům patří média a reklama. Nadšení, jež vyvolal ve chvíli, kdy byla vystavena první díla, nikdy nezesláblo - a dnes je větší než kdykoli předtím.

Futurismus, literární a výtvarný umělecký směr 1. čtvrtiny 20. století, je jedním z hlavních avantgardních směrů. Záměrem futurismu byla obnova společenského života ve všech jeho uměleckých a také sociálních oblastech, přičemž východiskem a měřítkem teoretických myšlenek se staly nejnovější technické vymoženosti a vědecké poznatky. Futurismus tudíž nepředstavoval žádnou avantgardu, která by se snažila výhradně o formálně estetické inovace, jako například kubismus, nýbrž se mnohem více považoval za hnutí života. Tuto vizi následovaly nejrozdílnější umělecké osobnosti, které svou individualitou hnutí obohatily, ale zároveň ho učinily náchylnějším ke sporům a štěpení. Futuristická skupina prokázala pružnost svého personálního složení, stejně jako i místa a času působení, a než v první polovině 40. let dospěla ke svému konci, prošla si mnoha vrcholy i pády.

Land of The earth as canvas In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums. Dadaizmus je smer v literatúre a vo výtvarnom umení, ktorý vznikol v období prvej svetovej vojny ako prejav individualistickej vzbury intelektuálov, ktorí detskou naivitou a nespútanou obraznosťou aj extravaganciami chceli bojovať proti konvenciám. Táto kniha približuje hlavných predstaviteľov tohto smeru a ich diela.

Zářivka běžně dostupná v obchodech upevněná diagonálně na zeď, neopracované dřevěné trámy nebo kovové desky, které na zemi vytvářejí nekomplikované. obrazce, bedny z kovu či plexiskla seřazené jednoduše vedle sebe, krychle a jiné základní stereo metrické útvary z překližky, hliníku nebo oceli - tak bychom mohli charakterizovat dna mnoha umělců, která vznikla začátkem šedesátých let v New Yorku a Los Angeles. Pro minimalismus je charakteristické geometrické řazení stejných prvků prosté jakéhokoli subjektivismu. Vznikl v Americe z velké části jako protiváha abstraktního expresionismu a pop-artu. Název "Minimal Art" (minimalismus) vznikl díky filozofovi umění Richardu Wollheimovi, který ve svém stejnojmenném článku z roku 1965 nechtěl postihnout nejnovější umělecké proudy v Americe, ale obecný fenomén v umění 20. století: minimalizaci uměleckého obsahu. Umělecká kritika nakonec tento termín přenesla na dna Carla Andreho, Dana Flavina, Donalda Judda, Sola LeWitta a Roberta Morrise.
