Román začíná legendárním baseballovým zápasem v New Yorku v roce 1951. Slavný homerun, který napínavé prestižní utkání rozhodne, je zastíněn neradostnou zvěstí o tom, že Sovětský svaz právě provedl zkoušku atomové bomby. A baseballový míček, jenž tehdy přinesl týmu Giants takové štěstí, prostupuje celým dalším vyprávěním, stále odřenější, ale také hodnotnější. Otvírá čtenáři dveře do Nickova a Klářina života i do moderní duše americké kultury, od činžovních domů v Bronxu až po majestátní plesové sály či nálety B-52 na Vietnam.

Don De Lillo patří už několik desetiletí k nejrespektovanějším americkým spisovatelům. Dokonce bývá někdy - společně s Thomasem Pynchonem a Phillipem Rothem - považován za největšího amerického prozaika. Bílý šum je pronikavé dílo o falešném řádu, jež životu v moderní době dodává televizní kultura, informační technologie, ale třeba i akademický "establishment".

Don De Lillo je znám především jako romanopisec – a to ne ledajaký: kupříkladu nejvlivnější americký kritik současnosti Harold Bloom jej neváhal označit za jednoho ze čtyř největších žijících amerických prozaiků (vedle Cormaca McCarthyho, Philipa Rotha a Thomase Pynchona). Anděl Esmeralda je ovšem DeLillova první sbírka povídek – a opět nikoli sbírka ledajaká: americká kritika i čtenářská obec se vesměs shoduje, že se jedná o nejlepší autorovo dílo od přelomového románu Podsvětí (Underworld, 1997). Kniha nabízí průřez spisovatelovou tvorbou od konce sedmdesátých let do současnosti. V jistém smyslu by mohla sloužit jako úvod do DeLillova světa, najdeme v ní totiž většinu autorových erbovních témat: odcizení, paranoiu, obavu či přímo děs z přetechnizovaného, odlištěného světa, složitost lidské komunikace, neurčitý pocit ohrožení atd. Oproti autorovým románům je tu přitom jedno novum: většina povídek se vyznačuje jakýmsi melancholickým, snovým nádechem a prostupuje je – pro autora nezvyklá – nostalgie či melancholie. „Logika končí tam, kde začíná svět,“ říká jedna z postav DeLillovy povídkové sbírky – a tento výrok by bylo možné vztáhnout i na Anděla Esmeraldu.

Prašivý pes je mistrovským, stylisticky vytříbeným dílem autora, jehož měl český čtenář možnost poznat prostřednictvím románů Bod omega, Padající muž či Bílý šum. DeLillův „thriller“ z roku 1978 je přímo esencí konspiračních teorií a paranoidního vnímání reality, jež je tak typická pro určitý segment postmoderní literatury. Příběh se točí kolem údajné existence pornografického filmu, v němž těsně před koncem nacistické třetí říše vystupuje samotný Adolf Hitler. Skrze pátrání novinářky Moll Robinsové z undergroundového časopisu Running Dog pronikáme do temného světa obchodníků s erotickým uměním, z něhož vedou nitky do nejvyšších mocenských sfér. Autor vytváří celou síť tajných vztahů, souvislostí a asociací, jejíž charakter se nikdy zcela neodhalí, a skrze stupňující se napětí a vzrůstající násilí, které sebou přináší hledání „perverzního grálu“, zároveň čtenáři nabízí jemnou analýzu systému mocenských i technologických manipulací, které jsou pro naši dobu typické.

Uprostřed pouště, „kdesi na jih od míst, kde lišky dávají dobrou noc“, se do opuštěného domu postaveného z plechu a prken uchýlí jistý válečný poradce, aby přemýšlel o prostoru a čase. Richard Elster, nyní třiasedmdesátiletý, byl vědec, když si ho na schůzku pozvali vládní váleční stratégové. Ti Elstera požádali, aby dal koncept jejich snažení – aby vytvořil intelektuální rámec pro rozmísťování vojáků, protipovstalecké akce, zatykače. Dva roky četl jejich tajné dokumenty a navštěvoval jejich tajné schůzky. Měl mapovat realitu, kterou se tito muži pokoušeli zformovat. Po skončení své služby se Elster stáhne do pouště, kde se k němu připojí filmař rozhodnutý zdokumentovat jeho zkušenost. Jim Finley chce natočit jednozáběrový snímek, v němž bude Elster jedinou postavou – „Jen muž proti zdi“. Ti dva vysedávají na terase, popíjejí a debatují. Finley obhajuje svůj film. Týdny ubíhají. A pak přijede na návštěvu Elsterova dcera Jessie – Newyorčanka „z jiného světa“ – která dramaticky změní dynamiku příběhu. Následuje šokující událost a celá diskuse obou mužů, onen akumulovaný význam konverzace a vztahu, je zpochybněna. Zůstává jen ztráta, krutá a nepochopitelná.

Poprvé se na scéně objevuje právník Keit, který dorazí 11. září odpoledne do bytu své bývalé partnerky celý zakrvácený, špinavý a šokovaný. Šokovaná je pochopitelně i ona, protože už ví, co se stalo. Několik dnů po útocích není v chaosu jen město, služby, doprava, obchody, ale také lidé. Autor se věnuje především psychologii odloučeného manželského páru a jejich synovi. Keith už se do zaměstnání nikdy nevrátil. Podruhé je vypravěčem mladý Arab Hammad, jeden z těch, kteří se v Americe zúčastnili výcvikového programu pro pilotování letadel. Právě jeho očima spatříme hrůzný čin: to on pilotuje letadlo, které narazí do Severní věže. Potřetí se ocitáme znovu ve středu dění, ale z jiné strany: ve věži, právě když se k ní blíží letadlo… DeLillo nezaměnitelným způsobem zachycuje nejrůznější, často protikladné aspekty moderní reality, hlavně všeprostupující pocit paranoie a nesmiřitelný konflikt mezi jedincem a moderní technologií. Kritika román hodnotí jako jedno z nejlepších děl o 9/11 a vrchol autorovy tvorby.

Vynikající román jednoho z klíčových amerických spisovatelů současnosti. Sonda do duše megapolisu stejně jako do psychiky člověka, který je zvyklý utrácet během vteřiny miliony. Nicméně ani svět „uvnitř“, tak bedlivě oddělený od toho reálného, není stoprocentě bezpečný… Kniha byla předlohou stejnojmenného filmu slavného režiséra Davida Cronenberga.

Don DeLillo bývá označován za jednoho ze tří největších žijících amerických prozaiků (vedle Cormaca McCarthyho a Thomase Pynchona) – a jeho poslední kniha, útlý román Ticho, výmluvně dokládá proč. Děj není nijak složitý: na Manhattanu se jeden postarší manželský pár spolu s mladším rodinným přítelem chystá v televizi sledovat Super Bowl, tedy finále ligy amerického fotbalu. Připojit se k nim má druhý pár, který se právě letadlem vrací z Paříže. Svět však náhle postihne blíže nespecifikovaná, zato však totální technologická porucha; přesto se přátelé nakonec sejdou a společně se pokoušejí vyrovnat s nastalou situací, přičemž kolísají mezi paranoidním přesvědčením, že nastává konec světa, a pochybnostmi, jestli veškeré tyto obavy a úzkosti nejsou jen přemrštěnou, hluboce iracionální reakcí na tuctový výpadek proudu. O děj ovšem nakonec tolik nejde: napětí v DeLillově próze neplyne z děje, ale z jazyka plného zvláštně poskládaných slov a slovních spojení nabitých záhadnými, skrytými, a přesto důvěrně známými významy a emocemi – a taky z vět plných nedořečených, a přesto hrozivých náznaků toho, co všichni tak nějak víme nebo aspoň temně tušíme.
