Kniha vychází vychází k příležitosti 100. výročí Staigerova narození, představuje reprezentativní průřez jeho celoživotním dílem. Kromě nejproslulejší Staigerovy knihy, Základních pojmů poetiky (Grundbegriffe der Poetik, 1946), výbor obsahuje autorovy programové studie a články, curyšský proslov s následným polemickým ohlasem i ukázky z korespondence a vzpomínek. Tři oddíly knihy dokládají Staigerův myšlenkový přínos ve třech nejdůležitějších, vzájemně se prolínajících oblastech: první je svědectvím Staigerova pokusu o vytvoření antropologicky fundované poetiky, druhý přináší texty věnované – především v dialogu s filosofií M. Heideggera – problematice literární hermeneutiky, ve třetím jsou zahrnuty texty vymezující Staigerův osobitý koncept stylu a zabývající se otázkou estetického hodnocení literárních děl.

Autor knihy, švýcarský germanista, klasický filolog a literární teoretik, je jedním z těch, kteří obnovili a zproblematizovali metodologii literární vědy a položili řadu závažných otázek. Ve své stěžejní práci z roku 1946 přehodnocuje základní otázky normativní poetiky a teorie druhů,položené již Aristotelem, ve smyslu fundamentální ontologie.Na katagorie epična, lyrična a dramatična aplikuje heideggerovskou analýzu času, čímž z poetiky vytváří příspěvek k filosofické antropologii.
