Piccolominiho, spisovatele, humanisty a římského papeže Pia II., se stala díky své čtivosti a obšírnosti na dlouhá staletí nejvyhledávanějším dílem o českých dějinách v celé Evropě. Problematičnost Historie české spočívá v tom, že Piccolomini je determinován svým celoživotním postavením významného, vrcholného a posléze nejvrchnějšího církevního manažera a hodnostáře. Proto samozřejmě nekompromisně odmítá jakékoliv odklony od církve...

Kurz vor seiner Wahl als Papst Pius II. im Sommer des Jahres 1456 schrieb der Kaiserliche Rat und Kardinal Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464) seine Böhmische Geschichte. Seitdem er die hussitischen Gesandten beim Konzil von Basel 1431 beobachtete, hatte er diese Schrift, das Kernstück einer Reihe von Beschreibungen Europas, vorbereitet. Darin macht Enea deutlich, dass für ihn die Gefahr für das Reich vom Osten, genauer gesagt von den tschechischen Hussiten, ausging. Die vorliegende Ausgabe besteht aus drei Teilen. In Band 1 wird erstmals der Grundtext aus allen erreichbaren Handschriften konstituiert. Eine deutsche Übersetzung wird ihm gegenübergestellt. Im 2. und 3. Band werden die beiden ältesten, bisher nicht edierten Übersetzungen veröffentlicht: die mittelhochdeutsche des Breslauer Ratsherren Eschenloër und die alttschechische des mährischen Priesters Jan Huska.

This is a text and translation with introduction, notes, and index, of the Epistola ad Mahomatem II ( Epistle to Mohammed II) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Pope Pius II, 1458-1464). Written ca. 1460, the goal of the epistle is to persuade Mohammed II, who had conquered Constantinople in 1453, not to press his attack on the West and to persuade him of the benefits of converting to Christianity.
