Mezi lety 1915–1941 si V. Woolfová psala deník, poslední zápis je datován čtyři dny před její smrtí. Nepsala však denně, zpravidla jednou za několik dní. Deník poskytuje přehled o tom, co oněch 27 let dělala, o lidech, které potkávala, a zejména, co si myslela o nich, o sobě, o životě. Když zemřela, zůstalo po ní 26 svazků rukopisu. Tuto knihu (editorem byl manžel spisovatelky Leonard Woolf) tvoří pochopitelně jen výňatky z deníků, které Woolfová využívala i jako umělkyně. Rozmlouvala sama se sebou o rozepsaných i chystaných knihách. Probírala problémy zápletky, formy díla, postav. Najdeme zde pasáže, v nichž si očividně ověřuje umění psát, a také komentáře knih, které četla. Kniha tak vrhá světlo na záměry a metody Woolfové jako spisovatelky a poskytuje neobvyklý psychologický obraz umělecké tvorby. Deníky dokumentují i výjimečnou energii, vytrvalost a svědomitost, s nimiž se věnovala spisovatelskému umění.

V eseji Tři Guineje, která vznikla roku 1938, se Woolfová myšlenkově vyrovnává s hrozbou války a s otázkou, jak se má v dané situaci zachovat žena. Její nečekaná, pro mnohé provokativní odpověď, která odmítá přijmout zhoubnou dualitu fronty a týlu, se snaží proniknout klamavými zástěrkami onoho míru, jenž je pouze pokračováním války jinými prostředky, a vede k rozboru oné agresivity, jež hluboce proniká i sférami kultury a vzdělanosti a vybíjí se v ponižování žen. Roky je román Virginie Woolfové z roku 1937, poslední, který vydala za svého života. Sleduje historii rodiny Pargiterů od 80. let 19. století do poloviny 30. let století minulého. Přestože zde spisovatelka zachytila dobu tak dlouhou, próza není rozsáhlá, vyprávění se zaměřuje spíše na drobné detaily životů postav. Román v překladu Zuzany Mayerové vychází česky vůbec poprvé. …Myslím, že to bude něco úžasného. Musím být otevřená, odvážná. Chci zachytit celou současnou společnost, nic nevynechat: popsat fakta i vize. A vzájemně je propojit… Je to vůbec možné? … Jak dosáhnout hloubky a neustrnout v nehybnosti? Mě ale baví zdolávat tyhle překážky, a v přirozenosti je svěží vítr a síla. Mým cílem je obsáhnout nekonečnou šíři, nekonečnou intenzitu. Podobně jako ve známém románu Paní Dallowayová se příběh odehrává během jediného dne a dá se shrnout do několika vět. V zahradě Olivera Gilese se bude, jako již po sedm let, hrát tradiční historická hra; napsala ji a sama nastudovala stárnoucí bývalá herečka La Trobová. Domácí čekají, jak představení dopadne. Přicházejí nečekaní hosté, scházejí se vesničané, hra začíná a diváci ji bezprostředně komentují. Po představení se na zahradu snáší klid. Lidé se vracejí sami k sobě... A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. Adeline Virginia Woolf was born in 1882 and was to become a founder of modernist writing. Her background is filled with elements of tragedy that she somehow overcame to become a revered writer. Her mother died when she was 13, her half sister Stella two years later and with it her first of several nervous breakdowns. She began writing professionally at age 20 but her father’s death two years later brought a complete mental collapse and she was briefly institutionalised. Three of her half brothers had sexually abused her so further darkness was added to her life. But out of this came great innovations in writing; she was a pioneer of “stream of consciousness”. Whilst the dark periods continued to interrupt her emotional state her rate of work never ceased. Until on 28 March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat, filled its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse and drowned herself leaving behind a note which read in part “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do”.

The story concerned the emotional and sexual awakening of a young Englishwoman traveling abroad, and bristled with social commentary on issues as varied as homosexuality, the suffrage movement, and colonialism. She was warned by colleagues, however, that publishing an outspoken indictment of Britain could prove disastrous to her fledgling career as a novelist. Moreover, the critical offensive from men would be especially harsh towards a woman author. Woolf thus revised the novel extensively, omitting much of the political candor until, in 1915, the quieter book was published under the title The Voyage Out.
