In the 1950s, racism in Orlando threatened the impending Civil Rights Movement, but a spirit of cooperation and communication between black and white community leaders existed. The 1951 integration of the Orlando Police Department was instrumental to the success of biracial committees and helped achieve relatively peaceful integration in Orlando.
