Jednoho dne najde lékař Bernard Rieux před svou ordinací mrtvou krysu. Na zdánlivě banální událost vzápětí zapomene, ale ve dnech následujících začnou krysy houfně vylézat ze svých děr a kanálů a v agonii umírají na chodníku. Brzy se příznaky podivné epidemie objeví i u lidí a obětí přibývá geometrickou řadou... O Moru (1947) si Albert Camus poznamenal do svého Zápisníku, že má ráz „mytického příběhu“. Mytický a filozofický význam má především epidemie sama; lze ji chápat jako alegorii okupačních let, ale i v mnohem existenciálnějším měřítku jako samo zkonkretizované absurdno, jemuž Bernard Rieux, typický Camusův hrdina, vzdoruje civilně a bez hrdinských gest.
