Kniha Na konci cesty (1958) bývá v díle amerického spisovatele Johna Bartha zařazována do „existencialistické fáze“, jež předchází autorovu radikálnímu přestupu k vyhroceným postmoderním postupům. Hlavní hrdina novely Jacob Horner na radu doktora uniká před svou nerozhodností a nihilismem tak, že si v určitých životních momentech nasazuje masky: Před školním výborem se chová jako idealistický a práci oddaný učitel, jindy hraje nezodpovědného mladého muže či nevědomky napodobuje svého racionálního kolegu Joea Morgana. Hraní rolí ovšem není bez nebezpečí – nevyhnutelným důsledkem je zaplétání se do mezilidských vztahů a odtažitý a cynický Jacob se náhle ocitá v komplikované situaci milostného trojúhelníku. Dává se unést přijímanou rolí a ztrácí vědomí vlastního já, což následně příběh nasměruje k tragickému konci. V jádru ironií prosyceného vyprávění tak stojí zdánlivá nemožnost rozhodovat se pro správné konání ve světě, jenž postrádá absolutní hodnoty.
