    • Enterprise restructuring has evolved into a continuous process rather than a temporary crisis for many organizations and sectors. Unfortunately, these restructuring efforts often fail to achieve their goals of securing or enhancing profitability and can jeopardize the physical and psycho-social health of all employees. Increased sick leave and presenteeism among workers can significantly impair organizational performance. Restructuring acts as both an individual and organizational stressor, leading to chronic health issues for laid-off workers and those who remain. To mitigate the risks associated with restructuring, collaboration among various stakeholders—individuals, enterprises, and society—is essential to implement healthier change procedures and support affected workers during transitions. The European Expert Group on Health in Restructuring (HIRES), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Thomas Kieselbach from the University of Bremen and supported by the European Commission's DG Employment, provides a comprehensive overview of the impacts of restructuring and suggests frameworks for "healthier restructuring." The findings are based on interdisciplinary expertise from 15 European partners and 12 external experts. With its policy recommendations and innovative case studies, the report targets policymakers, labor inspectorates, unions, managers, occupational health personnel, shareholders, and workers, highlighting the urgent need for

    • This volume focuses on social exclusion related to unemployment, particularly among vulnerable young unemployed individuals across six European countries. It stems from an international research project (YUSEDER) under the European Commission's Targeted Socio-Economic Research (TSER) program. Researchers from diverse fields, including health psychology, public health, psychiatry, industrial sociology, and medical sociology, collaborated on this study. Social exclusion has become a significant topic in European policy discussions, as barriers to entering the labor market increase the risk of social exclusion for youth, impacting the broader social fabric. The contributions explore theoretical reflections on the meaning and scope of social exclusion for young unemployed individuals from a comparative perspective. Research was conducted in three Northern European countries (Sweden, Germany, Belgium) and three Southern European countries (Spain, Italy, Greece), with specific national reports for each. The comparative section analyzes similarities and differences among countries with varying historical and social contexts regarding youth marginalization. This work aims to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by young unemployed individuals and the implications of social exclusion across different European settings.

This volume is the third publication of the project "Youth Unemployment and Social Exclusion: Objective Dimensions, Subjective Experiences and Innovative Institutional Responses in Six European Countries" (YUSEDER), supported by the Directorate General Research of the European Commission within the Targeted Socio Economic Research Programme of the 4th Framework Programme. The YUSEDER project addresses crucial questions about the risk of social exclusion linked to long-term youth unemployment. The first volume presented empirical evidence on youth unemployment and health across the six participating EU countries, while the second focused on social exclusion related to youth unemployment and highlighted vulnerable groups among young unemployed individuals. The third volume offers qualitative analyses of 300 young long-term unemployed individuals (ages 20-25) and their experiences with unemployment and social exclusion in six European countries. It aims to analyze the extent of social exclusion among these young people, exploring the processes and developments leading to social exclusion, key mechanisms that connect unemployment to social exclusion (including protective and vulnerability factors), and individual coping strategies related to unemployment and the associated risks of social exclusion.

    • This book addresses the links between unemployment, precariousness work and health risks from various scientific frames of reference as well as those of policy-makers. The authors range from major classics in the field to newcomers from several countries presenting their research results. The authors include also representatives of several international organizations. The anthology is of a multidisciplinary character and its articles evaluate the contributions of various projects, programmes and standard public services for persons at risk of labour market exclusion. It updates the research agenda, which is most topical during the financial crisis and economic restructuring of today.

This volume assembles the background and results of the major part of the empirical research performed in the frame of the SOCOSE project – interviews with employees who are affected by changing work environments (“insecure jobs”) or who had previously lost their jobs and have found new employment through the help of outplacement/replacement counselling (“successfully reemployed”). 250 employees in five European countries were questioned with regard to their experiences and their future job prospects. For each country, we will present cases where social actors joined in an innovative way in order to cope with redundancy, where specific strategies were developed, e. g. targeting vulnerable groups, or where employers expressed their social responsibility towards dismissed employees in a way that could set an example.

As occupational transitions rise, employees face heightened insecurity regarding their employment situations, with formal workplace guarantees diminishing. Society and research must adapt to these changes, emphasizing the concept of employability—continuous adaptation to the evolving labor market. However, the responsibility for this shift cannot rest solely on individual employees, nor should the repercussions of company restructuring fall entirely on society. Companies that dismiss employees or demand greater flexibility must be held more accountable. Concurrently, individuals should transition from passive recipients of assistance to active partners in their re-orientation process. The normalization of occupational transitions paved the way for the scientific evaluation of the European research project "Social Convoy and Sustainable Employability: Innovative Strategies for Outplacement/Replacement Counselling" (SOCOSE), led by Thomas Kieselbach at the University of Bremen. This interdisciplinary research involved psychologists and social scientists across five countries—Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands—who studied the social convoy from dismissal to successful labor market reintegration. Contributions from labor law and business ethics further enriched the findings. The project's primary outcome is a framework for developing outplacement and replacement intervention strategies for employees facing job ins

      Social convoy in enterprise restructuring
    • The present volume presents initial findings from an international research project focused on youth unemployment and social exclusion, highlighting the latest research across six European countries. Supported by the European Commission's Research Directorate General, the project examines the critical relationship between long-term youth unemployment and social disintegration, framed within the concept of social exclusion. It seeks to identify key mechanisms that link the experience of prolonged unemployment to various dimensions of social exclusion, addressing both vulnerability factors that exacerbate unemployment stress and protective mechanisms that mitigate the risk of exclusion. Additionally, the research explores innovative institutional and political responses tailored to different national contexts. The analyses encompass three Northern European countries—Sweden, Belgium, and Germany—and three Southern European countries—Spain, Italy, and Greece. Through this comprehensive approach, the project aims to contribute valuable insights into the challenges faced by unemployed youth and the effectiveness of interventions designed to combat social exclusion.
