Je to příběh chlapce z proletářské rodiny, který po tvrdém dětství nastoupí dráhu dělníka, odejde později jako britský voják do Malajska a vrací se do Anglie duševně uzrálý a zkušenostmi vyzbrojený s vědomím, že má nyní v ruce klíč ke dveřím života a že „stačí, když pak jen napne příslušné svaly a ty dveře otevře“.
