The House Filler is told through the experiences of a woman, Golden Phoenix, who faces war, famine, and political oppression as she fights for independence, freedom and happiness. After the untimely death of her husband, Golden Phoenix is determined to keep her family together. But during the upheaval of the invasion, she is separated from her teenage twin daughters and one of her sons leaves to join the Nationalist army. In her Japanese-occupied hometown, Golden Phoenix and her adopted son endure unspeakable horrors at the hands of the occupying forces. The novel ends in 1965, as the rumblings of the Cultural Revolution begin.
