Více o knize

This collection features poems by Emily Dickinson, edited by her friends Mabel Loomis Todd and T.W. Higginson. Born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dickinson came from a prominent family and studied at the Amherst Academy before briefly attending the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She spent much of her life in reclusive isolation, developing a reputation for eccentricity, particularly her preference for white clothing and her reluctance to engage with visitors. Dickinson never married, and her friendships largely relied on correspondence, which deepened her reclusive nature in her later years. Her poetry reflects what Emerson termed "the Poetry of the Portfolio," created without the intention of publication and driven solely by personal expression. This approach meant she often missed the benefits of public critique and adherence to conventional norms. However, it also allowed her the freedom to explore unconventional thoughts. A true recluse, she spent years without stepping beyond her doorstep and was persuaded only with difficulty to publish a handful of poems during her lifetime. Despite her indifference to conventional rules, she maintained a rigorous literary standard, frequently revising her work to achieve the precise sound she desired.
