The Talisman, published in 1825, is set during a truce in the third Crusade and follows Sir Kenneth, who, on his way to Syria, encounters a Saracen Emir. They ride together, discussing love and necromancy, until they reach the hermit Theodoric's cave. The hermit, in correspondence with the pope, provides them with refreshment and later conducts Kenneth to a chapel, where he is recognized by Lady Edith, the object of his devotion. Meanwhile, King Richard Coeur de Lion falls ill, and a Moorish physician, who had previously healed Kenneth's squire, offers to cure him. After a consultation, the physician administers a potion, and Richard awakens, only to find political intrigue brewing as Conrade of Montserrat schemes to undermine him. As tensions rise, Kenneth is tasked with guarding the English standard but is distracted when the dwarf Necbatanus brings him a message from Lady Edith. In his absence, the banner is stolen, and his dog is injured. Overwhelmed with shame, Kenneth is approached by the physician, who reveals Saladin's desire to marry Edith and suggests seeking the Sultan's protection. Kenneth chooses to confront Richard, but is sentenced to death. After intercessions from the queen and Lady Edith, he is merely forbidden to appear before Richard again. Disguised as a Nubian slave, Kenneth ultimately saves the king from an assassin and offers to uncover the thief of the standard.
