The story explores the clash between traditional values and emerging nihilistic philosophies through the dynamics of a family. Arkady returns home with his friend Bazarov, whose radical ideas disturb his father Nikolay and uncle Pavel. Nikolay's relationship with his servant Fenechka adds tension, especially with the arrival of their child.
