In Los Angeles in 1985, seventeen year old Tamar Kelly is exhausted by her complicated family and longs for something different. She finds it by spending a year as an exchange student in Thailand, as far away from home as she can get. She discovers that things there are definitely different, sometimes in ways she more or less expected, and sometimes in ways she could not have imagined.
