This memoir recounts the author's bi-cultural childhood in Mexico during the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Mexico City and raised in Jalisco, she embodies a blend of American and Mexican identities, stating, “My skin is white but my soul is brown.” Her experiences span the vibrant city life with her multicultural, artistic family and the stark realities of village life, lacking basic amenities. This duality reflects her connection to her immigrant parents, who left the U.S. for Mexico—her father, a rare book dealer often away on quests for valuable finds, and her adventurous mother, a designer who learns to shoot to protect their home from burglaries. The author navigates two languages daily, keenly observing the diverse cultural dynamics among Mexicans, Americans, and foreigners. Having lived in Mexico for many years, she began writing at nine, influenced by her unique upbringing as a child of immigrants. Her journalism for "Mexico City News" highlighted local art and culture, while her gallery showcased both resident and visiting artists. She co-founded a bilingual school for her children, who are also bilingual and multicultural. Her poetry and short stories have appeared in various anthologies, and she is currently working on a novel set in Michoacán.
