Yearning for a Broad Place: An Architect's Odyssey from Baltimore Blues to Cape Cod Bays, from Sorcerer's Apprentice to Pilgrim

Více o knize

Everyone has a "broad place" of freedom they yearn to escape to, often in daydreams. The author reflects on Cape Cod as such a place during his 1950s childhood, when the landscape still retained its wildness. Initially, the reasons for his yearning are subtly hinted but build to a crescendo of intellectual hubris. His narrative intertwines personal salvation with insights on architecture, landscape, and the tension between Tradition and Modernity, exploring the sharp edges of progress throughout his life. You'll meet Uncle Frank, a talented designer of custom automobile bodies, grappling with the challenges of an era dominated by mass production. Another uncle, a Christian Scientist, engages in discussions about biblical truth. A poignant chapter honors Rev. Paul Anderson, who chose to preach in the less glamorous Fall River, paying a high price for his faithfulness. Alongside vivid evocations of Cape Cod and Boston, readers familiar with Melville's Moby-Dick and Dickens' novels will find much to appreciate. Emil Heller Henning III, raised between Boston and Baltimore, holds a master's degree in architecture, served in the Army Corps of Engineers, and has practiced architecture since 2002. He became a Christian in 1977 and is an elder at his church, with previous and upcoming works on biblical themes.
