Young people face heightened police attention compared to other age groups, yet their views and experiences regarding law enforcement remain underexplored. This relationship is influenced by the context of encounters, historical developments, and national policing strategies. In the context of increasingly multi-ethnic cities, youth-police relations encounter new challenges. Utilizing an original dataset, the book presents fresh evidence on how young individuals in multi-ethnic German and French cities perceive and experience their interactions with the police. Through systematic analysis of youth-police encounters and attitudes, it sheds light on ethnic profiling practices targeting the younger generation and identifies individual and contextual factors that hinder positive relations. The book is structured into several parts: the first examines the quantity, quality, and correlates of young people's contacts with the police, along with their attitudes and willingness to cooperate. The second part discusses theories, key assumptions, and methods for framing youth-police relations. The empirical evidence section provides findings on police contacts, experiences, and attitudes of juveniles toward law enforcement, including factors influencing their willingness to cooperate or resort to self-help measures. The conclusion synthesizes these insights, supported by a bibliography and annex.
