Proslulé dílo klasika francouzského realismu kreslí obraz života pařížské buržoazie v polovině 19. století. Na osudu zámožného mladíka, který se vyžívá v milostných tužbách a dobrodružstvích, v romantických snech a diletantských pokusech o osobní uplatnění, je podána kritika měšťáckého životního stylu, jeho pokrytectví a prázdnoty.

Příběh prosté venkovské ženy-služky, která sražena životním neštěstím na dno ponížení a sociální bezbrannosti, nachází smysl svého bytí jen v tom, že ustavičně něčemu slouží a žije pro druhé.

První povídka – Prosté srdce – je příběhem života chudé venkovské dívky. Legenda o svatém Juliánu Pohostinném je středověkou legendou, kterou viděl Flaubert zpodobenou na barevných oknech chrámu. Herodias zachycuje rozporuplnou situaci společnosti, v níž se zrodilo křesťanství. Poslední povídka je zpracováním biblického příběhu o krásné a kruté orientální tanečnici.

Autorův poslední, nedokončený román. Je o dvou vysloužilých písařích, kteří dobu, po kterou jsou v důchodu, věnují usilovnému studiu. Nic se jim ale nedaří a vždy se dočkají pouze posměchu.

Právě skončila první punská válka (264-241 př.n.l.) a před branami poraženého a vyčerpaného Kartága stojí armáda žoldnéřů žádajících svou mzdu. Salambo, dcera legendárního velitele Hamilkara Barky, pro ně uspořádá v zahradách otcova paláce usmiřovací hostinu. Zde ji poprvé spatří Matho, pozdější vůdce vzbouřených barbarů. Tak začíná jeden z nejslavnějších historických válečných románů. Flaubertův román překypuje barvami, je plný světel, záblesků i stínů, mistrně líčí bitvy a vojenská tažení, ohromuje davovými záběry i scénami strhujícími svou krutostí. Román patří k zlatému fondu světové literatury a oblíbily si jej generace čtenářů.

Jeden z nejslavnějších románů 19. století. Emma Bovaryová je obětí středostavovských konvencí poloviny 19. století. Jako mladou romantickou dívku ji provdali za venkovského lékaře, a ona tak příliš záhy poznává ubíjející monotónnost manželského života. Snaží se před nudou uniknoutmalým flirtem a marnotratnými nákupy, což značně otřese rodinným rozpočtem. Autobiografický román z roku 1838, vydaný až posmrtně.

Slovník přejatých myšlenek byl nalezen po Flaubertově smrti mezi rukopisy vztahujícími se k jeho poslednímu, nedokončenému románu Bouvard a Pécuchet. Bezpochyby měl být podkladem pro druhý díl knihy, ne-li přímo jeho součástí. Flaubert, jak vysvítá z jeho korespondence, zamýšlel už na začátku padesátých let vydat Slovník samostatně a s obsáhlou předmluvou. Měla to být jakási obhajoba lidské hlouposti a prostřednosti, plná citátů a důkazů nedokazujících nic nebo opak toho, co se má dokázat. V celé knize neměla být jediná myšlenka z vlastní hlavy autorovy. Flaubert si přál, aby se ten, kdo knihu přečte, bál promluvit ze strachu, že mimoděk pronese některou z vět v ní obsažených. Zaslechnete-li přesto ještě i dnes hlubokomyslný a nezvratný soud, jakoby přímo citovaný ze Slovníku, uvědomte si, že lidská hloupost, která podle Flauberta záleží ve snaze dělat ke všemu konečné závěry, má tuhý život. Román, jehož předlohu Flaubert našel nejspíše v Goethově Faustu. Jejich společným prvkem je člověk a ďábel. Vize, která předvádí v šíleném mumraji všechny fantazijní výtvory, jimiž lidstvo zaplňovalo v průběhu své historie prázdnotu nebes klenoucích se nad jeho proměnlivým hemžením. Klasické dílo světové literatury - Pokušení Svatého Antonína (La Tentation de Saint Antoine) - je knihou, na níž francouzský spisovatel Gustave FLAUBERT (1821-1880) strávil prakticky celý tvůrčí život. Byla publikována ve třech verzích (1849, 1856 a 1872), definitivní verze pochází z roku 1874. Námětem díla jsou známá pokušení, kterým byl vystaven svatý Antonín Veliký na poušti – téma často reflektované ve středověkém i moderním umění. Kniha je psána formou divadelního scénáře a pojednává o jedné noci, kdy byl svatý František vystaven zvláště trýznivým pokušením. Autora k napsání knihy inspiroval obraz s tímto motivem, který viděl v Paláci Balbi v Janově. Kniha je považována za vrchol Flaubertova díla, třebaže jeho nejznámějším dílem je román Paní Bovaryová.

Osmnáctiletý Flaubert napsal jakousi parodii na středověké mystérium s názvem Smarh, kde vystupují Satan a další středověké postavy.
