Když chce pomoci doktoru Vérasvámímu vstoupit do klubu, jehož členové jsou pouze běloši, naplno tak odhalí pokrytectví a rasistické předsudky vládnoucích Britů. Ve svém prvním románu George Orwell barvitě popisuje Barmu dvacátých let, se všudypřítomnou korupcí, úzkoprsostí a zneužíváním domorodého obyvatelstva: „Koneckonců, domorodci byli přece domorodci — zasloužili si pozornost, to jistě, ale i tak to byl jen „poddaný“ národ, méněcenný národ lidí s černými obličeji.“

Na návrh svého nakladatele strávil George Orwell v roce 1936 několik měsíců v severoanglickém hornickém městečku Wigan, aby zde dokumentoval otřesné podmínky, v nichž zdejší dělníci žijí a pracují. Po této zkušenosti napsal reportážní prózu Cesta k Wigan Pier, v níž přesně a živě popisuje bídné ubytování, nuzné výdělky a ubohou hygienu, jakož i nemoci a podvýživu, jež místní horníci často zakoušejí. Po tomto soupisu bídy a beznaděje přechází autor k abstraktním úvahám o povaze socialismu, jeho výhodách či nástrahách, a dochází k názoru, že socialismus by měl usilovat spíše o obyčejnou lidskou slušnost a podílnictví než o politicky rigidní stranické hnutí či neprůstřelný filozofický systém.

Orwellův román z roku 1939 zachycuje život v Anglii před druhou světovou válkou očima pojišťovacího agenta George Bowlinga. Jde o průměrného byvatele středoanglického předměstí s průměrným platem a nadprůměrnou váhou. Byť je navenek typickým představitelem středního stavu, se společenskou realitou se nedokáže vyrovnat. Stejně tak se míjí i se světem manželky Hildy a svých dvou dětí. Banální příhoda nasměruje jeho myšlenky do zapomenutého dětství, starého "nezkaženého"světa klukovských radovánek, a nakonec v sobě nachází dost odvahy na to, aby útěk do rodného kraje zrealizoval. Namísto krajiny dětství však nachází průmyslové město, které je mu naprosto cizí... Leitmotivem knihy je strach z blížící se války a hlavně z toho, co přijde po ní - uniformní společnost, kde bude jakákoliv odchylka od normálnu krutě trestána. On 15 February 1945, George Orwell left his desk in London to report as a war correspondent about the advance of the Anglo-American troops on the continent and the effects of the war against Nazi-Germany. Orwell travelled in the wake of the victors through bombed-out German cities. Eight months previously the house he had lived in with his family had been destroyed by German bombs. Between 25 February and 10 June 1945, 20 of his articles were printed - 14 in The Observer und six in Manchester Evening News. Two of them are being reprinted here for the first time. Extracts from essays which relate to this journey and "Revenge Is Sour", his best known essay about his experiences in defeated Germany which appeared in the second half of 1945, are supplemented.
