V jiné poloze však uplatňuje smysl pro detaily, jichž si všímá v životě lidí vnímaných jako individuality, nikoli jen bezejmenná masa tvořící dohromady množinu anglického národa či španělských republikánů. Popisuje-li „obyčejné“, anonymní aktéry dějinných událostí, vnímá je, i pokud stojí na opačné straně barikády, především jako lidské jedince, již mají v jeho očích všichni stejný nárok na štěstí, natož na samotný život. Jak říká v titulní eseji „Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou“: „…Přišel jsem zastřelit „fašistu“, ale člověk, který si přidržuje kalhoty, není „fašista“, je to očividně blízký tvor, stejný jako vy, a vám se nechce ho zastřelit.“

Farma zvířat je alegorický satirizující román George Orwella, ukazující formou bajky politické vztahy a děje mezi lidmi. Autor se důsledně vyhýbá vysvětlujícím komentářům, ale vzhledem k době napsání díla je nejzjevnější podobenství se stalinistickou degenerací Sovětského svazu. V příběhu se objevuje skupinka zvířat, která se vzbouří a vyžene lidi z farmy, na které žije, a vede ji sama. Jejich vláda se však postupně zvrhne v brutální tyranii. Tento román byl napsán v průběhu 2. světové války a vydán srpnu roku 1945. Kniha Georga Orwella Hold Katalánsku, ktorá zachytáva jeho skúsenosti zo španielskej občianskej vojny, má pre jeho život a myšlienkový vývoj výnimočné miesto. Orwell sa do Španielska vybral, aby zažil autentický socializmus, ktorý pre väčšinu znamená beztriednu spoločnosť. Po príchode vstúpil do milície POUM, trockistickej frakcie, čím si spečatil svoj osud. PSUC, komunistická strana, sa snažila zlikvidovať všetkých, ktorí s ňou nesúhlasili. Kým POUM považoval boj proti Francovi za súčasť revolúcie, PSUC tento boj nespojoval s politickou a sociálnou zmenou, čo Orwella deprimovalo. Svedčil o tom, ako komunisti manipulovali fakty a obviňovali ideologických odporcov, pričom zažil aj konkrétne formy stalinských metód a nezákonných praktík. Orwell videl, ako čestných bojovníkov prenasledovali, mučili a vraždili. Podľa neho išlo v občianskej vojne o konflikt medzi tými, ktorí chceli pokračovať v revolúcii, a tými, ktorí ju chceli zastaviť. Okrem zachytenia ovládania španielskych mocenských orgánov sovietskymi poradcami identifikoval iracionalizmus totalitarizmu a jeho manipuláciu s vedomím ľudí, pričom poukazoval na falošnosť ľavicovej aj pravicovej tlače. Uvedomoval si, že cynické manipulovanie s vedomím sa vyskytuje na oboch stranách a varoval pred podobnosťou medzi fašizmom a komunizmom, zdôrazňujúc, že antifašista musí byť zároveň proti totalitarizmu.

John Flory pracuje v Barmě jako obchodník s teakovým dřevem. Je otrávený britskou imperiální politikou a jediné povyražení nachází v rozhovorech s indickým doktorem Vérasvámím a později i ve vztahu s mladou Angličankou Elizabeth Lackersteenovou. Když chce pomoci doktoru Vérasvámímu vstoupit do klubu, jehož členové jsou pouze běloši, naplno tak odhalí pokrytectví a rasistické předsudky vládnoucích Britů. Ve svém prvním románu George Orwell barvitě popisuje Barmu dvacátých let, se všudypřítomnou korupcí, úzkoprsostí a zneužíváním domorodého obyvatelstva: „Koneckonců, domorodci byli přece domorodci — zasloužili si pozornost, to jistě, ale i tak to byl jen „poddaný“ národ, méněcenný národ lidí s černými obličeji.“

Na návrh svého nakladatele strávil George Orwell v roce 1936 několik měsíců v severoanglickém hornickém městečku Wigan, aby zde dokumentoval otřesné podmínky, v nichž zdejší dělníci žijí a pracují. Po této zkušenosti napsal reportážní prózu Cesta k Wigan Pier, v níž přesně a živě popisuje bídné ubytování, nuzné výdělky a ubohou hygienu, jakož i nemoci a podvýživu, jež místní horníci často zakoušejí. Po tomto soupisu bídy a beznaděje přechází autor k abstraktním úvahám o povaze socialismu, jeho výhodách či nástrahách, a dochází k názoru, že socialismus by měl usilovat spíše o obyčejnou lidskou slušnost a podílnictví než o politicky rigidní stranické hnutí či neprůstřelný filozofický systém.

Orwellův román z roku 1939 zachycuje život v Anglii před druhou světovou válkou očima pojišťovacího agenta George Bowlinga. Jde o průměrného byvatele středoanglického předměstí s průměrným platem a nadprůměrnou váhou. Byť je navenek typickým představitelem středního stavu, se společenskou realitou se nedokáže vyrovnat. Stejně tak se míjí i se světem manželky Hildy a svých dvou dětí. Banální příhoda nasměruje jeho myšlenky do zapomenutého dětství, starého "nezkaženého"světa klukovských radovánek, a nakonec v sobě nachází dost odvahy na to, aby útěk do rodného kraje zrealizoval. Namísto krajiny dětství však nachází průmyslové město, které je mu naprosto cizí... Leitmotivem knihy je strach z blížící se války a hlavně z toho, co přijde po ní - uniformní společnost, kde bude jakákoliv odchylka od normálnu krutě trestána. Kromě této linie však románem prochází celá řada vtipných, ostře ironických komentářů....

Gordon Comstock je mladý spisovatel, který pohrdá „bohem peněz“ a jeho nadvládou nad celou meziválečnou anglickou společností. Odmítne proto práci v reklamní agentuře a nechá se zaměstnat v malém knihkupectví. Výsledkem je však pocit, že jím jeho dívka Rosemary pohrdá právě proto, že se vzdal světských statků. Bože chraň aspidistru je psychologicko-společenský román, v němž Orwell trefně vykresluje tápání mladého, zmateného idealisty ve společnosti hnané touhou po zisku. Se suchým humorem popisuje pošetilé chování svých hrdinů, zároveň však odmítá poskytovat jednoduché odpovědi na jejich složitá osobní dilemata.

Zamyšlení nad smyslem víry v Boha a nechtěný útěk dcery vesnického faráře do zcela odlišného prostředí. Orwell napsal román v roce 1935. Děj se odehrává v jihovýchodní Anglii počátku 30. let, kdy víru, upadající za malicherných sporů jednotlivých vyznání, střídá kult materiální. A tak lidé nemají ani Boha, k němuž by se utíkali, ani peníze, s jejichž pomocí by unikli peklu na zemi, které svými předsudky, hloupostí, omezeností, lhostejností a zlobou připravují jeden druhému. Co je víra, co jen zvyk, co dává životní pouti smysl, co je štěstí a svoboda, proč děláme to, co děláme? O tom s kousavým humorem i vážně tento román vypovídá.

Úpadek anglické vraždy je menší „sborník“ Orwellových sociálních a politických děl. V této knize se věnuje rozborům některých anglických spisovatelů, politické situaci a také v nich zachycuje své vlastní zážitky.
