Napsal ji o vánočních prázdninách r. 1944 své pětileté neteři Olivii de Haulleville, která jezdívala do jeho domu v Mojavské poušti v Kalifornii. Rukopis téměř zapomenuté knížky byl teprve nedávno nalezen na půdě domu sousedů Yostových, o nichž se v knížce také píše. Bylo velké štěstí, že Yostovi tehdy také dostali jednu kopii, protože původní rukopis vrátila Olivia strýčkovi s prosbou, aby ho také ilustroval.
