Aldous Huxley

Aldous Leonard Huxley (26.

Pod změněnými jmény zobrazuje sebe, okruh svých přátel i nepřátel a některé postavy anglického veřejného života. • Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World, Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley's bold, nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis, a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life, loves, and adventures, Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them, Anthony is left shattered—and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world.

    • Aldous Huxley's lifelong concern with the dichotomy between passion and reason finds its fullest expression both thematically and formally in his masterpiece Point Counter Point. By presenting a vision of life in which diverse aspects of experience are observed simultaneously, Huxley characterizes the symptoms of "the disease of the modern man" in the manner of a composer--themes and characters are repeated, altered slightly, and played off one another in a tone that is at once critical and sympathetic. First published in 1928, Huxley's satiric view of intellectual life in the '20s is populated with characters based on such celebrities as D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Nancy Cunard, and John Middleton Murry, as well as Huxley himself.

Urbain Grandier was burned at the stake at Loudun, France, on 18 April 1634. Did anyone really believe that he was the sorcerer responsible for the possession by devils of a whole convent of nuns who fell regularly into paroxysms of obscene and heretical frenzies? No matter. It was a blatant political frame-up from Cardinal Richelieu down. He was too insolent, too promiscuous, too dangerously alive. And yet, even after he was burned, the Devils of Loudun stayed on to taunt and fascinate victims and tourists alike. Huxley's gripping history of events in seventeenth-century has great contemporary relevance in a world which has not learned as much as it thinks about the persecution of freedom by fear, bigotry, envy and greed... This version is not available in the US. Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), renowned for his literary vision, was the grandson of Thomas H. Huxley, a defender of Darwin. Born in England, he was educated at Eton and Oxford, and traveled extensively, spending time in Italy during the 1920s. Huxley started his career with poetry and critical essays before transitioning to novels. Although he missed participating in World War I, his early works, such as CROME YELLOW (1921), ANTIC HAY (1923), and POINT COUNTER POINT (1928), captured a sense of purposelessness that resonated with British society. A satirical tone emerged in BRAVE NEW WORLD (1932), leading to works with fantastic or speculative themes, including AFTER MANY A SUMMER DIES THE SWAN (1939) and APE AND ESSENCE (1948). His final work, ISLAND (1962), presents a utopian vision. In his later years, Huxley expressed disdain for Western society, exploring Eastern mysticism and psychedelic drugs, as detailed in THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION (1954). MORTAL COILS is a collection of short stories from Huxley's early period, featuring one of his most popular tales, "The Gioconda Smile."

Using the method devised by Dr. William H. Bates, "the pioneer of visual education," as Huxley called him, and heeding the advice of Dr. Bates' disciple, Margaret D. Corbett, Aldous Huxley conquered a vision problem that had plagued him for more than a quarter century.

Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World, Aldous Huxley's highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel.
